Comprehensive Case Studies and Analysis Collection for Tech Startups 'Gisul Saeophwa' Published

[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] A comprehensive case study and analysis on technology startups has been published in the book "Technology Commercialization for Successful Business of Technological Resources."

CEO Maker Publishing announced this publication on the 29th. Co-authored by Professor Kyunghwan Kim of Sungkyunkwan University Graduate School of Global Entrepreneurship and Jihoon Lee, Secretary General of the Technology Holding Company Association, this book comprehensively covers topics that can successfully lead the commercialization of research and development outcomes across 14 chapters in two parts.

Professor Kim explained, "South Korea invests the highest level of research and development relative to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the world and has secured global competitiveness in fields such as semiconductors, mobile phones, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence (AI). Nevertheless, the efficiency of research and development in small and medium enterprises, universities, and government-funded research institutes is insufficient compared to countries like Israel and the United States. In particular, startups through technology transfer of R&D results are even more lacking."

The first part is titled "Understanding Technology Commercialization." It discusses technology commercialization, entrepreneurial spirit and entrepreneurship, performance diffusion, technology commercialization models, and case studies. Reflecting the recent trend of expanding the scope of technology commercialization to the R&D planning stage, it also covers the derivation of product development items. The second part focuses on technology transfer and policy. It addresses technology valuation, intellectual property rights, spin-offs, and technology holding companies. Special emphasis is placed on technology finance to overcome the so-called "valley of death," which refers to difficulties in funding. Recent technology commercialization systems and programs are also broadly covered. Additionally, the book includes content on patent pools, patent boxes, and technology securitization. For the first time in Korea, it includes information on taxes related to technology transfer and commercialization, as well as domestic and overseas laws and support systems related to technology commercialization.

Meanwhile, author Professor Kyunghwan Kim earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Sungkyunkwan University, a Master of Economics from Yonsei University, and a Master of Information and Communication Management from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He later received a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Sungkyunkwan University. Currently, he serves as the head professor at the Graduate School of Global Entrepreneurship at Sungkyunkwan University, director of the Laboratory Startup Innovation Group, and director of the Campus Town Project Group. He has served as president of the Korean Productivity Society and the Industrial Cluster Society, and currently holds vice president positions at the Korean Entrepreneurship Society and the Management Education Society. Co-author Jihoon Lee, Secretary General of the Technology Holding Company Association, earned his doctorate from Kangwon National University and currently serves as Secretary General of the Technology Holding Company Association.
