[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 28th that it will launch a time-series internet service for urban transformation across the city starting from the 1st of next month, utilizing the accumulated aerial photograph data.
Since 2009, Gwangju City has been capturing aerial photographs biennially, producing orthophotos by eliminating errors and correcting them to their exact positions.
In particular, the city has steadily carried out a mosaic project that integrates analog aerial photographs taken before 2007 through precise scanning, which has been used extensively in various administrative tasks such as policy decision-making.
This internet service has been expanded to allow any citizen to use it, developed to enable playback of aerial photographs by year to view urban changes over time at a glance or to examine aerial photographs of a specific year in detail.
Through this, it is possible to confirm the appearance of Gwangju before industrialization and urbanization.
Additionally, by comparing photographs from multiple years or overlapping continuous cadastral maps, roads, and urban planning maps for simple reference, it is expected to broaden citizens' opportunities to utilize spatial information such as GIS and help with property management.
In this regard, since January 1, 2019, Gwangju City has signed a business agreement with the National Geographic Information Institute and has been providing a free service that allows online aerial photograph downloads and issuance through the National Land Information Platform, expanding non-face-to-face service areas, preventing budget waste caused by duplicate investments, and striving to fulfill citizens' right to know.
Lee Su-won, head of the Land Information Division of the city, said, “We will continue to add yearly images and improve citizens' accessibility to spatial information to enhance citizen convenience.”
