Gangwon-do for Untact Healing... Buzzing with the 'Chukangseu' Craze

Gangwon-do for Untact Healing... Buzzing with the 'Chukangseu' Craze

This Chuseok, spending the holiday at hotels, known as ‘Chukangseu’ (Chuseok + vacation), is gaining popularity. Especially, consumers seeking to relieve the fatigue caused by COVID-19 are turning their attention to Gangwon-do, where they can enjoy nature up close.

According to data compiled by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Gangwon-do, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, during this year’s Chuseok holiday period (September 30 to October 4), the average hotel reservation rates in Gangwon-do and Jeju were 94.9% and 56%, respectively. This is interpreted as an increase in people who prefer to take complete rest in independent hotel rooms instead of visiting their hometowns or traveling, in line with the ‘untact holiday’ trend.

In fact, according to the hotel industry, Kensington Resort Seorak Valley located in Goseong, Gangwon-do, is reported to be fully booked during the Chuseok period. Kensington Hotel Pyeongchang has already booked 90% of its 306 rooms, and Lotte Resort Sokcho currently shows a 75% reservation rate.

An industry insider said, “Consumers seeking to soothe their weary minds due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic are visiting Gangwon-do, where untact healing is possible,” adding, “Especially, hotels in Gangwon-do that offer an independent yet unique atmosphere are popular because they allow guests to enjoy rest while maintaining social distancing.”

■ The most exotic premium hotel on the East Coast, ‘Cassia Sokcho’

Meanwhile, interest is heating up in ‘Cassia Sokcho,’ which is being built in Sokcho, Gangwon-do. It is the first large-scale premium hotel introduced on the East Coast by the global hospitality chain Banyan Tree Group. It is attracting attention as it is expected to be an exotic hotel incorporating Banyan Tree Group’s unique design, service, and operational know-how.

Since its establishment in 1987, Banyan Tree Group has positioned itself as a ‘sanctuary for weary souls’ and is a global hospitality chain representing premier travel destinations worldwide. It operates 47 hotels and resorts, 60 spas, over 70 retail galleries, and 3 golf courses across 24 countries, providing the best leisure experiences to global opinion leaders.

‘Cassia,’ introduced for the first time in Korea, is a residence hotel brand with a modern and unique concept for consumers seeking stylish villas. Although the name may be unfamiliar, as a brand under Banyan Tree Group, it is well known as a place where guests can experience the dignity and top-tier service of premium hotels and resorts.

‘Cassia Sokcho’ enhances its exterior aesthetic by implementing an integrated design inspired by books, created by architect Kim Chan-jung, who was selected as one of the 20 next-generation architects attracting global attention. The infinity pool, which offers an unobstructed ocean view, includes a sandy beach, creating the feeling of a private beach and an exotic atmosphere. The rooftop space on the upper floors will be developed as a ‘hip’ place where guests can enjoy the romance and leisure of the East Sea with a modern sensibility and sophisticated interior.

Other facilities planned include a library lounge by the world-renowned art book publisher ‘Assouline,’ a luxury spa and sauna utilizing 1,000-meter-deep underground mineral water, and a 400-seat banquet hall suitable for international conferences and business events. Additionally, indoor pools, kids’ pools, fitness centers, and restaurants will be strategically placed throughout the property.

‘Cassia Sokcho’ has also paid great attention to its interior spaces to provide guests with deep rest and inspiration. Every room is equipped with an indoor Hinoki pool and a balcony, allowing guests to relax their body and mind while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the East Sea. Notably, the spatial arrangement where the bed, bathtub, balcony, and ocean view align in a straight line gives guests a feeling akin to staying at a famous overseas resort.

The hotel industry expects ‘Cassia Sokcho’ to become a new driving force for local tourism. An industry insider said, “Hotels in Sokcho have long been known as places mainly visited by tourists, but with the opening of Cassia Sokcho, the area’s image will be enhanced with luxury.” He added, “Especially, the fact that it will have a 400-seat banquet hall capable of hosting international conferences is attracting attention, and it is expected to attract diverse demand including business and weddings.”

Meanwhile, Banyan Tree Group’s ‘Cassia Sokcho’ will operate under an ownership system through individual registration. Contract holders can use the facility for 30 days a year (7 days during peak season, 7 days on weekends and holidays, and 16 weekdays) by prior reservation at their preferred times. The remaining 335 days will be managed by Banyan Tree Group on consignment, and the profits will be distributed to the owners.

In particular, since the globally renowned hotel and resort chain Banyan Tree Group will be entrusted with management, owners of Cassia Sokcho contracts are expected to minimize operational burdens and enjoy stable rental income.

Banyan Tree Group’s ‘Cassia Sokcho’ will be located at 937 Daepodong, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, with a total floor area of 120,560 square meters, a height of 99 meters, and will consist of 2 basement floors and 26 above-ground floors, totaling 717 rooms. A VIP lounge is located in the designer building at 85-4 Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and operates by prior reservation.
