Guri-si Participates in Gapyeong Joint Burial Facility... MOU with Gapyeong-gun

[Asia Economy (Guri) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Guri City in Gyeonggi Province signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gapyeong County on the 28th for the 'Gapyeong Joint Funeral Facility (Crematorium) Construction Project.'

The Gapyeong Joint Funeral Facility, scheduled for completion in 2026, will operate with approximately seven cremators. It will also include enshrinement facilities, natural burial grounds, and convenience facilities. The project cost, excluding land acquisition fees, is 51 billion KRW. Currently, preliminary procedures such as public recruitment and candidate site selection for the construction site are underway.

As of 2018, Guri City had a cremation rate of 88.6%, and the demand for crematoriums has been increasing annually, but there were many inconveniences for citizens due to the lack of cremation facilities.

Accordingly, Guri City has been supporting 30% of the usage fee when Guri citizens use crematoriums in other cities or counties, and 50% for low-income groups.

However, to fundamentally solve the problem, the city decided to jointly participate in the Gapyeong Joint Funeral Facility construction project. The city expects this to significantly contribute not only to reducing the construction project cost burden but also to lowering funeral costs for citizens. Additionally, it will enable linked use of enshrinement facilities and natural burial ground crematoriums.

Mayor Ahn Seung-nam of Guri said, "With the increasing demand for crematoriums every year and the inconvenience caused by cost disparities for Guri citizens using crematoriums in other cities and counties, participating in the Gapyeong Joint Funeral Facility construction project together with Gapyeong County, Namyangju City, and Pocheon City will resolve a long-standing wish of Guri citizens," adding, "It will also greatly contribute to funeral welfare."
