Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Launches 13MW Solar Project on Roof and Parking Lot of Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 28th for the joint development of the 'Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant 13MW Solar Power Project' with Dongkuk Steel, TM Solutions, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and S-Energy.

The signing ceremony was conducted in writing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees included Lee In-sik, Head of KHNP's Green Energy Division; Kim Ji-tak, Manager of Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant; Jung Tae-chul, CEO of TM Solutions; Yoo Ho-jae, Head of Domestic Sales at Hyosung Heavy Industries; and Park Sang-min, CEO of S-Energy.

The Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant 13MW Solar Power Project involves constructing solar power facilities utilizing large-scale idle spaces such as the roofs and parking lots of the Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant. The total project cost is approximately 14.3 billion KRW, with construction scheduled to begin in January next year and completion targeted for June. After completion, it is expected to produce about 15,900 MWh of electricity annually.

The project will use GIX (ultra-high corrosion-resistant steel plates) products manufactured by Dongkuk Steel. Compared to conventional GI (galvanized steel plates) products, GIX offers a more aesthetically pleasing surface appearance and corrosion resistance that is 5 to 7 times superior. It is expected to contribute to clean and renewable energy production even in coastal areas where corrosion is a concern.
