[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] In Indonesia, a child rapist was sentenced to 169 public cane lashes, drawing attention.
According to the daily Kompas on the 28th, the Banda Aceh court in Aceh Province on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, sentenced Roni bin M. Hasan (28) to six months in prison and 169 public cane lashes for child rape charges in May.
The authorities carried out Roni's public caning on the 24th of this month at Bustanussalatin Park.
The rattan cane began striking Roni's back, and he raised his hand midway to request a break. After receiving 52 lashes, he begged, "Please stop."
The executioner examined Roni's back and said, "There are severe bruises and blisters; if we continue now, he will bleed," and decided to suspend the punishment.
The authorities plan to administer the remaining 117 lashes once Roni's wounds have healed.
On the same day, five people convicted of gambling received between 6 to 9 lashes each and were released.
Aceh Province is the only region in Indonesia that applies Islamic Sharia law, with 98% of its 5 million residents being Muslim.
In Aceh, sexual crimes, drinking, gambling, adultery, homosexuality, premarital sex, and public displays of affection are punished by public caning.
In December last year, female executioners were assigned for the first time to cane female offenders, and caning punishments have continued despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
