Gwangju Innovation Promotion Committee Recommends National Policy for 'AI City Gwangju'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Gwangju Innovation Promotion Committee, directly under the Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Chairman Ju Jeong-min), finalized the plan to create Gwangju as an AI-centered city leading the AI powerhouse Republic of Korea and recommended it to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 28th.

This recommendation is the 22nd since the Innovation Promotion Committee was launched as an advisory body directly under the mayor on November 27, 2018, following recommendations and proposals on public institution innovation, activation of municipal art groups, smart manufacturing innovation, establishment of the Gwangju-type welfare model, low birthrate measures, achievement of a 2050 carbon-neutral city, and transition to a with-COVID-19 administrative system.

In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, amid fierce industrial competition, countries around the world are establishing and implementing national-level AI policies such as technology development and industrial convergence with their lives at stake, and our government is also actively promoting AI as a national policy by announcing a digital-based Korean New Deal policy.

Accordingly, the Innovation Promotion Committee recommended 33 tasks in four areas to Gwangju City with the goal of ‘creating Gwangju as an AI-centered city leading the AI powerhouse Republic of Korea’: ▲ establishing and implementing AI policies leading government policies ▲ strengthening AI hub foundations such as technology innovation platforms and workforce training ▲ fostering AI-based convergence industries as the city’s future strategic industries ▲ utilizing policy tools such as smart factories, regulatory free zones, startups, and ventures.

Chairman Ju Jeong-min stated, “In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, AI must be the driving force for Gwangju to grow as an economic and industrial hub city in the southwestern region of the country,” and added, “I hope this recommendation will be reflected in city administration and contribute to Gwangju leading innovation in the Republic of Korea.”
