About 800 Billion KRW Support Provided for Vaccine Joint Purchase Program and Assistance to Poor Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will provide approximately 510 billion KRW in funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) over the next four years. Additionally, he will invest about 750 billion KRW in the COVID-19 vaccine sharing program.
According to the public broadcaster BBC on the 25th (local time), Prime Minister Johnson is expected to announce these plans in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly. In a pre-recorded speech, Johnson stated that the UK will support the WHO with ?340 million (approximately 510 billion KRW) over the next four years. If this support is realized, the UK is expected to become the largest donor to the WHO.
Furthermore, Johnson pledged to provide ?71 million (about 110 billion KRW) to the international program for joint purchase and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, and ?500 million (approximately 750 billion KRW) to help low-income countries secure vaccines.
Johnson said, "The UK, the birthplace of Edward Jenner, who developed the world's first vaccine, will work with the United Nations to heal divisions and do its utmost to heal the world."
