[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] A total of 4,644 public Wi-Fi spots have been installed across Jeju, including Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 25th that since 2017, it has been expanding the Jeju Free Wifi service throughout the island, covering major tourist attractions, buses, parks, and bus stops.
Jeju Province is aiming to install 6,000 public Wi-Fi spots by 2024, and as of last month, a cumulative total of 4,644 units (including 1,326 installed by the Ministry of Science and ICT) have been set up.
Additionally, it provides value-added convenience services unique to the tourism city of Jeju, such as free internet access (expansion of public Wi-Fi), reduction of household communication expenses, and big data platform collection and analysis.
In particular, this year, public Wi-Fi was installed on Hallasan (including Witseooreum and Seongpanak Rest Area) and the summit of Seongsan Ilchulbong, where installation had been difficult due to the lack of communication infrastructure.
Public Wi-Fi was also installed at the Citizen Welfare Town Plaza, a resting space for residents.
Along with this, since the 2017 public transportation system reform, free public Wi-Fi installed on 809 city and intercity buses?the first in the nation?has been expanded to include Udo village buses, Yudo ferry, and library BOOK buses, totaling 932 vehicles in operation.
Although data usage slightly decreased compared to the previous year due to the impact of COVID-19, an average of 154TB per month was used as of last month.
If individual data purchases were applied at 6.4 KRW per MB (KT data 5GB for 33,000 KRW), it would cost 1,034 million KRW, but Wi-Fi usage is estimated to save 857 million KRW monthly.
Yoon Hyung-seok, Director of Jeju Province’s Future Strategy Bureau, stated, “We will continue to improve by providing high-quality Wi-Fi services, simplifying connection methods, enhancing security, and developing IoT value-added services integrated with 4th industrial technologies.”
