Seogwipo Coast Guard Conducts Marine Environment Cleanup Activities on 'International Coastal Cleanup Day'

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Coast Guard Station (Chief Do Gi-beom) held an underwater and coastal cleanup event on the 24th in the Sinheung-ri area of Namwon-eup, Seogwipo City, to commemorate the 20th International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The "International Coastal Cleanup Day" is a global coastal cleanup event held around the third Saturday of September every year. It began in 1986 in Texas, USA, and was introduced in Korea in 2001 through private initiatives, with government-led efforts starting in 2014.

On this day, about 20 members of the Seogwipo Coast Guard participated, collecting 500kg of underwater submerged waste such as abandoned fishing nets and fishing gear that threaten haenyeo divers' work, as well as coastal litter left by typhoon damage.

A Seogwipo Coast Guard official stated, "Starting with the underwater abandoned fishing net collection activity in the first half of this year in the Mureung fishing village, the Seogwipo Coast Guard is promoting nationwide cleanup activities, including cleanup events commemorating 'Sea Day.' We will continue to strive to create a safe and clean Jeju sea."
