Gokseong-gun Creates New Landmark, Melon Village with Fresh Green Waves in Early Spring

Start of Melon Maeul Development Filled with Various Attractions

[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 24th, Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it has started the Melon Village creation project, one of the third-year goals of the Gokseong Melon Rural Convergence Industry District Development Project.

The creation of Melon Village is a project to develop Geumye Village in Daepyeong 2-gu, the main melon producing area, into a tourist village symbolizing Gokseong Melon.

This project aims to connect Gokseong Station, the hub of Gokseong tourism, Seomjingang Train Village, Gokseong Melon Complex Experience Center, and Melon Village into a single tourism experience course to promote landscape development.

The main content of the Melon Village creation project is to create a differentiated village landscape ahead of the construction of the Gokseong Melon Complex Experience Center, and it is currently in close consultation with the plan to link it with the trolley bus being prepared to revitalize the commercial district within Gokseong-eup.

Representative examples include installing mailboxes and nameplates for 110 households in Melon Village, installing a melon-shaped pergola, maintaining the Melon Village recycling station and installing a design fence, remodeling the photo bulletin board at the village hall, and cleaning the exterior walls at the entrance of Melon Village. The pergola at the entrance of Melon Village is designed to provide a resting place for tourists visiting the village while naturally reminding them of Gokseong Melon.

It is said that the design was unified to satisfy tourists' needs in connection with the experience center. In particular, from the preparation stage, a Melon Village Promotion Committee was formed to actively reflect residents' opinions through continuous meetings and exchanges of views.

Farmers in Geumye Village began cultivating melons in 1982. This shows the special affection residents have for Gokseong Melon. Gokseong-gun expects that the mailboxes and nameplates shaped like Gokseong Melon will further enhance the values and pride of the Melon Village community members.

The person in charge of the Gokseong Melon Rural Convergence Industrialization Project Group stated, “By transforming Geumye Village into Melon Village and promoting an image change as a tourist village, we will make it a new landmark of our county along with the Gokseong Melon Complex Experience Center.”
