Samsung Display Achieves Top Certification for Zero Waste Landfill

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Display announced on the 24th that its Asan plant has received the 'Zero Waste to Landfill Certification' from the global environmental safety certification organization 'UL'.

Samsung Display's Asan 1 plant achieved the highest grade, 'Platinum', in the zero waste to landfill category from UL. This raises the recycling level one step higher following the 'Gold' grade obtained by the Asan 2 plant last year.

The 'Zero Waste to Landfill Certification' system is a measure that evaluates a company's resource recycling level. UL assesses the recycling level of waste generated at the plant and awards Silver (recycling rate 90?94%), Gold (95?99%), and the highest level, Platinum (100%) grades accordingly.

Samsung Display has carried out various activities to expand waste recycling.

Since the early production stage in 2004 at the Asan 1 plant, impurities in waste liquid generated during the manufacturing process have been filtered and reused within the process. Later, by operating a resource circulation center, waste products were disassembled and separated by material for recycling.

Metal flooring materials generated during FAB (factory) remodeling are also recycled and reused, and waste from display glass substrates has been made usable as cement raw materials. Activities to reduce the use of plastic disposable products through active participation of all employees are also underway.

Through these activities, 100% of the waste generated at the plant has been converted into resources.

Jae-yeol Lee, Director (Executive Vice President) of Samsung Display's Sustainable Management Office, said, "Under the principle that environment-first management enables sustainable corporate growth, we are promoting the minimization of resource use throughout the entire manufacturing process."
