[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] "Thank you so much for all your help so far. Please use the donated money for a good cause."
"Thank you. We will never forget your kindness. Please receive your treatment well and get back on your feet soon."
On the 23rd, Seong Jang-hyun, the mayor of Yongsan-gu, visited Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital (59 Daesagwan-ro).
He came to express his gratitude to Lee Nam-seon (82), who is hospitalized there.
Mr. Lee is a basic livelihood security recipient. On the 17th, he donated 20 million won in cash to the Yongsan Welfare Foundation (Chairman Lee Sang-yong). This was the money left after deducting hospital bills and deposit from his entire assets.
Mr. Lee had been living with his younger sibling in Bogwang-dong, Yongsan-gu. However, his sibling passed away the year before last, and he himself was recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. As his condition worsened and he was hospitalized, he decided to use the remaining money meaningfully.
A foundation official said, "We received a call from the elder and went to his home, where he took out a bundle of money saved for donation," adding, "It seems he saved it diligently by setting aside living expenses from his welfare benefits and church donations."
Mayor Seong met Mr. Lee that day and after a conversation of about 10 minutes, asked the medical staff to take good care of his health. He also requested the foundation officials to ensure that the donated money is used meaningfully.
The foundation plans to allocate the donation as part of its basic assets and use it for welfare projects in the future.
Seong Jang-hyun, mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "Even healthy and wealthy people find it hard to do what Mr. Lee Nam-seon has done," and added, "I hope for his speedy recovery."
The Yongsan Welfare Foundation is a social welfare hub institution in the region. Established in May 2016, it has secured basic assets of 10.19 billion won through support from various sectors. Its main projects include support for low-income families in crisis and scholarships for youth.
They are also conducting a local coexistence support project for Chuseok. They produced 4,000 coupons worth 10,000 won each and plan to distribute them to 400 vulnerable households by the end of this week. The coupons can be used at 160 local businesses including restaurants, side dish stores, and small marts.
Lee Sang-yong, chairman of the Yongsan Welfare Foundation, said, "Mr. Lee Nam-seon's good deed is inspiring many people," and added, "The foundation will continue to do its best to promote a culture of donation."
