The group BTS inspired courage in the younger generation disheartened by the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). On the 23rd, they delivered a video message urging everyone to overcome the crisis together at a high-level meeting of the UN Health Security Friends Group held via video conference. They said, “Our tomorrow may be dark, painful, and difficult,” but added, “The stars shine brighter the deeper the night. It is always darkest just before dawn.”

This meeting was held as a side event of the 75th United Nations General Assembly. The international community gathered to overcome the damage caused by COVID-19 and protect future generations. BTS sincerely shared their experience of creating music and rising again amid the COVID-19 crisis.

RM said, “COVID-19 was something unimaginable. All plans, including the world tour, fell apart, and I was left alone,” expressing, “Even when I looked up at the night sky, I couldn’t see any stars.” Jimin also said, “It felt like everything had collapsed,” and added, “My world, where I danced and sang with fans worldwide, seemed to shrink down to just one room.”

The driving forces that made them run again were music and friendship. V said, “I reflected on myself while making notes and creating songs,” and revealed, “I thought, ‘If I give up here, I’m not the protagonist of my life.’” J-Hope said, “I embraced many emotions and made music with the members. Because we started with difficulty, we could be honest about everything.” He continued, “Our lives are unpredictable, so there is no set answer,” comforting young people going through uncertain lives. Jin also advised, “Worrying about the future and constant effort are important, but above all, you must cherish, encourage, and enjoy yourself.”

Jungkook said, “We are living in uncertain times, but in fact, not much has changed,” and promised, “If there is something I can do, if we can give strength to many people with our voices, we will keep moving.” RM also urged, “We must remember and face who we are more than ever,” and encouraged, “Let’s love ourselves and strive to imagine the future.” Together with the other members, he cheered on the younger generation, saying, “Life goes on. Let’s live together.”

BTS has emerged as icons of the younger generation by embedding messages of self-love and positivity in their music. They have spread the right values in various ways offstage as well, such as running the ‘LOVE MYSELF’ campaign to eradicate violence against children and adolescents. In September 2018, they became the first Korean singers to speak at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Concerned about the future of the younger generation, they proposed, “Love yourself and raise your own voice.”
