[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk announced on the 23rd that it has decided to actively promote the '2020 Old Downtown Signboard Improvement Project' led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and has begun replacing signboards of businesses around Ssanghwacha Street and Saeam-gil.
Jeongeup City was finally selected in December last year in the national contest for the '2020 Signboard Improvement Project' hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Accordingly, with a total budget of 430 million KRW including 205 million KRW in national funds, the city has started refurbishing about 150 signboards along Ssanghwacha Street and Saeam-gil area roads (from City Hall to Jungang-ro).
The purpose is to replace the existing disorderly and rampant commercial signboards that harm the urban aesthetics and street scenery with signboards tailored to the characteristics of each business.
The history, culture, and characteristics of each business will be reflected in the typography and colors of the signboards, reborn as aesthetically beautiful and visually striking signboards.
In particular, this section has completed underground wiring and environmental improvement projects by KEPCO and KT as part of the urban regeneration project, and it is expected that the urban scenery will be greatly improved once the signboard improvement project is implemented.
To promote this signboard improvement project, the city designated a pilot zone for outdoor advertising maintenance and formed a residents' council and a national design team to facilitate active exchange of opinions between experts and residents.
Additionally, instead of the residents' briefing sessions canceled due to COVID-19 this year, design planning was conducted through four rounds of consulting by the Korea Outdoor Advertising Center and advisory committee members, as well as individual consultations with each business.
A city official said, "By encouraging voluntary participation of local residents to create differentiated signboards, we will revitalize the old downtown economy and make the streets a place where tourists visit again," adding, "We ask for much interest in the changing Ssanghwacha Street and Saeam-gil."
