Monitoring Waste Generation in 90 Multi-Family Housing Complexes on an Ongoing Basis
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 23rd that it will operate a reporting system for recyclable waste targeting about 90 apartment complexes in the district.
Dong-gu plans to accurately grasp the amount of recyclable waste generated from apartment complexes to improve the reliability of household waste statistics and establish an electronic management system for recyclable resources by promoting proper separation and collection of recyclables.
Until now, apartment complexes in the district have handled waste through contracts with waste collection and disposal companies independently, making it difficult to accurately identify the amount generated and processed, which lowered the reliability of household waste statistics.
However, with the operation and management of this reporting system, Dong-gu plans to accurately grasp the status and amount of recyclable waste generated monthly by type, and conduct customized publicity and education on separation and disposal methods according to the characteristics of waste generated by each apartment complex.
In addition, Dong-gu plans to expand recyclable resources by subdividing separation and disposal items and improving disposal methods in accordance with the revision of the "Guidelines on Separation and Collection of Recyclable Resources," which will be first implemented for apartment complexes in December.
Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, "Due to the spread of non-face-to-face culture caused by COVID-19, household waste has increased rapidly," and added, "We ask for the active cooperation of residents to practice resource circulation in daily life, such as reducing waste and separating disposal to save our environment."
