Chungnam Reports 248 Excessive Emission Complaints...7.8% Decrease Compared to Previous Year

[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] This year, the number of reports on diesel vehicles emitting excessive soot in the Chungnam region decreased by 7.8% compared to the previous year.

According to Chungnam Province on the 23rd, from January to July, 248 reports of excessive soot emissions were received, which is 21 fewer than the same period last year (269 reports).

Diesel vehicles are a source of mobile air pollution, and the gases (soot) emitted from operating vehicles are considered a major cause of air pollution.

Accordingly, the province identifies the actual owners of vehicles reported for excessive soot emissions through the vehicle inspection management system and transfers the complaints to the relevant city or county authorities based on the vehicle's location, guiding them to conduct vehicle emission inspections.

Additionally, if the reported vehicles do not undergo inspection, a fine of up to 1 million KRW is imposed.

Furthermore, the province imposes restrictions on diesel vehicles emitting excessive soot as sources of mobile air pollution by enacting the "Chungnam Province Polluting Vehicle Operation Restriction Ordinance," which allows continuous operation restrictions on grade 5 diesel vehicles that fail comprehensive vehicle inspections, fail to comply with low-emission orders, or operate for a certain period within the province despite being registered outside the air quality management zone.

A provincial official stated, "With the amendment of the ordinance for detailed emission inspections of operating vehicles and by raising awareness among vehicle owners themselves about excessive soot emissions, the number of reports on excessive soot emissions is expected to continue decreasing. Along with this, we ask for the interest and participation of each resident in improving air quality."
