Ministry of Industry Introduces Korean-Style Green New Deal at Clean Energy Ministers' Meeting

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 22nd that it attended the '11th Clean Energy Ministerial' (CEM) video conference and discussed ways to expand clean energy with representatives from member countries, international organizations, and major energy companies.

CEM is a forum established in 2010 under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Energy, aiming to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy.

At this meeting held under the theme of 'Supporting Recovery and Building the Future,' participants shared the current status and achievements of each country, including the implementation of key clean energy sector goals by 2030 and clean energy development strategies to overcome the COVID-19 crisis, and explored areas for cooperation.

Choi Wooseok, head of the New and Renewable Energy Policy Division, who attended as the Korean representative, stated that COVID-19 is both a crisis and an opportunity to re-recognize the urgency of responding to climate change and to accelerate the spread of clean energy.

He went on to introduce the main contents of the recently announced Green New Deal policy, saying that Korea is actively promoting the transition to clean and safe energy through the expansion of renewable energy and eco-friendly vehicles, as well as the reduction of coal power and nuclear power.

The participating countries agreed that each country's efforts to accelerate clean energy play an important role in recovery in the post-COVID-19 era and global climate change response, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that they decided to further strengthen international cooperation.
