Dongseo University Department of Tourism and TechTree Company Industry-Academic Joint Research Solves Tourist Double Counting Issue
Busan Tourism Organization Signs Technology Transfer Agreement with Korea Tourism Organization Busan-Ulsan Branch
Facial recognition unmanned measuring device jointly researched and developed by Dongseo University and TechTree Company.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A facial recognition unmanned measurement device has been installed at the Hwangnyeongsan Observatory Rest Area in Busan, attracting attention from the tourism industry.
This device was jointly developed by Dongseo University (President Jang Je-guk) and Tech Tree Company (CEO Kim Seong-min), and it recognizes the faces of tourists visiting the location to perform counting, ensuring high reliability.
Dongseo University developed the facial recognition unmanned measurement device that accurately counts the number of visitors at tourist sites through three years of industry-academic joint research.
In May, the device was installed at the Ulsan Bridge Observatory, and now it has been installed at Hwangnyeongsan Observatory Rest Area, a representative tourist site in Busan.
To install the facial recognition unmanned measurement device, the two institutions signed an agreement on technology utilization with Busan Tourism Organization and Korea Tourism Organization Busan-Ulsan Branch. They plan to share tourist information and enhance cooperation for additional tourism marketing in the future.
Previously installed unmanned measurement devices at tourist sites could not solve the problem of duplicate counting when measuring the number of tourists. Through this research, a system linked with a headcount solution was established to automate tourist counting and distinguish duplicates through additional facial recognition technology.
The solution also recognizes visitors' gender and age group, and the accumulated big data can be used as important material for establishing future tourism marketing strategies.
The devices to be installed this time will be placed one each at the Hwangnyeongsan Observatory Rest Area and the entrance to Hwangnyeongsan Bongsudae.
The Hwangnyeongsan Observatory Rest Area is operated by the Busan Tourism Organization. Hwangnyeongsan Bongsudae was selected as one of the 100 Night Tourism Attractions by the Korea Tourism Organization and is an important tourism resource of Busan.
With the installation of this facial recognition unmanned measurement device, it will be possible to accumulate big data by identifying the number of tourists as well as their gender and age in real time.
Hong Jeong-hwa, head of the Department of Tourism at Dongseo University, who led this research and development, said, “Following the Ulsan Bridge Observatory, installing the unmanned measurement device at Hwangnyeongsan Observatory Rest Area, a representative site of Busan, has given wings to this project,” and added, “We will contribute to upgrading Busan’s tourism promotion and marketing as an international tourism city.”
