Mention of 'Gongjeong 37' Called "Mockery of the People"
"Fire the Minister Whom the People Want to Step Down"
Nationwide Communication Fee Support "Must Be Stopped Immediately"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, criticized President Moon Jae-in on the 21st for mentioning the word fairness 37 times at the Youth Day commemorative ceremony, saying, “While remaining silent about the various unfairnesses this administration is showing, yet preaching fairness to the youth, isn’t this mocking not only the youth but the entire nation?”
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Ahn said, “Regarding Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae, even a passing word should have been said before mentioning fairness. That is common sense and the minimum duty to the people,” adding, “Is it fair to say you have a debt of gratitude for the behavior of a former Minister of Justice, but remain silent about the behavior of the current Minister of Justice?”
He pointed out, “Isn’t the Incheon International Airport Corporation incident, which provoked the anger of the youth, directly caused by the president himself? But is it enough to just pin it on the president of Incheon International Airport Corporation and make him a scapegoat?” and asked, “What responsibility does the president take for this issue? If the one causing the problem and the one taking responsibility are different, isn’t that the real unfairness?”
He continued, “I’m not saying to hold someone accountable for every single mistake. However, please dismiss the minister whom many citizens are calling to step down,” and added, “Show at least once that you respect the will of the people.”
Regarding the 4th supplementary budget, Ahn said, “The government and ruling party claim to support small business owners and micro-entrepreneurs, but in reality, they are trying to win public favor with the shallow method of nationwide communication fee support, which is the exact opposite,” and stated, “Stop this shallow trick immediately.”
Ahn proposed, “Until the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, I suggest that the government, local governments, and public institutions reduce the rent of building commercial spaces they own by 50%,” and said, “Business is not going well, sales are down, everyone is distressed and struggling, so if even the public sector continues to collect rent ‘punctually’ as before, how much harder will it be?”
