"IPhone 12 Starts at $749... Rising Component Costs"
Price Increase Inevitable Despite Charger and Earphones Excluded
Blue, Orange, and Purple Added to IPhone 12 Colors
6.1-Inch Model Named 'IPhone 12 Max'
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The price of the iPhone 12 is expected to be higher than its predecessor. Although there are no significant hardware changes, the support for 5G technology is anticipated to raise the starting price by $50, beginning at $749 (approximately 880,000 KRW).
On the 20th (local time), IT media outlet GizmoChina cited multiple sources stating that the iPhone 12 will start at $749. Last year's iPhone 11 started at $699, with a domestic retail price starting at 990,000 KRW. If the rumors are true, even the most affordable model is likely to exceed 1,000,000 KRW.
The iPhone 12 series will be the first 5G version, and the inclusion of a 5G modem and ToF sensor has increased component costs. To keep the retail price down, Apple plans to exclude earphones and chargers from the bundled package starting with the iPhone 12, and the 20W charger will be sold separately.
Apple has already begun mass production of the iPhone 12, and there is speculation that it may be unveiled as early as late September or early October. GizmoChina, citing Apple's supply chain, explained, "Apple has reduced the iPhone 12 production delay from several months to a few weeks, and final assembly of some iPhone 12 models will begin in early October." Apple has not announced a specific release schedule, and since a special event was already held on the 15th, foreign media and tipsters believe the unveiling is likely to occur on October 12 or 13.
Information about the colors and naming of the iPhone 12 series has also been revealed. Apple Rumors, an IT tipster, tweeted, "The 5.4-inch iPhone model will be named 'iPhone 12,' and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 model will be called 'iPhone 12 Max,'" adding, "It will be available in white, black, (PRODUCT) RED, light blue, orange, and purple colors."
The iPhone 12 series will be released in two sizes: 5.4 inches and 6.1 inches, along with a 6.7-inch model. The other 6.1-inch model is likely to be named iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch model is expected to be called iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Apple has set a production target of 80 million units for the iPhone 12 series by the end of this year. Of these, 40% are expected to be the iPhone 12 Max model.
