Dongdaemun-gu Volunteer Center, on the 19th, conducts real-time non-face-to-face activities with 15 families under the theme 'COVID-19 and Waste Disaster'... Online '#Together Challenge Event' ongoing, including using tumblers and avoiding plastic straws
On the 19th, the 'Smart Disaster Relief Camp' was conducted live online at the Dongdaemun-gu Volunteer Center.
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) Volunteer Center has prepared a special event to recognize the explosively increased disposable waste problem due to COVID-19 as a disaster together with residents and children, and to encourage participation in waste reduction.
On the 19th, from 10 a.m. for three hours, an online Zoom program titled "COVID-19 and Waste Disaster" was held for 15 families with elementary school children as part of the "Wise Disaster Relief Shelter Camp."
With regulations on disposable products loosened due to COVID-19 and the prolonged "stay-at-home" lifestyle increasing delivery food and online shopping, the use of disposable products has surged, worsening the waste problem.
In this situation, the Dongdaemun-gu Volunteer Center prepared various programs to help children and families easily approach environmental protection issues, including an OX quiz, bookmark-making activities to learn proper waste separation, DIY education using recyclables, experiencing emergency rations for disaster preparedness, and writing letters requesting companies that cause excessive packaging to join the campaign.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "I hope this program provided children with an opportunity to think deeply about environmental protection and waste issues. Although everyday practices like using tumblers instead of disposable cups and bringing containers to buy food are very inconvenient, I hope everyone participates in reducing disposable products and waste with the mindset that it is the first step to saving the Earth."
Meanwhile, the Dongdaemun-gu Volunteer Center is also operating the "#Together Challenge Event" to encourage many residents to join the waste reduction movement. Participants who share their experiences of missions such as not using plastic straws, bringing containers for packaging, and using tumblers, which have been ongoing since July, will receive gifts like silicone straws on a first-come, first-served basis for 50 people.
