[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] U.S. President Donald Trump expressed condolences on the news of the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering figure in the progressive camp and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, calling her "an amazing woman who led an extraordinary life."
While campaigning in Minnesota, President Trump heard the news of Justice Ginsburg's death and said, "I didn't know. This is the first time I'm hearing," adding, "She lived an amazing life. What more can I say?" according to the U.S. political media outlet The Hill on the 18th (local time).
President Trump asked, "Did she just pass away?" and said, "Hearing that news makes me sad."
However, when reporters asked whether he planned to nominate a candidate to succeed Justice Ginsburg before this year's presidential election, he did not provide a separate answer.
Shortly after, President Trump released a statement on Twitter saying, "I mourn the loss of a 'giant of the law' and will pray for her family," recalling, "She was known for her brilliant mind and powerful dissents on the Supreme Court."
He continued, "Justice Ginsburg showed that one can dissent without being unpleasant to colleagues or opposing views," emphasizing, "Her opinions, including rulings on legal equality for women and people with disabilities, instilled a sense of justice in all generations and Americans."
