Alchemy for Eternal Life?…The Play 'Equal' Opens Today

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The two-person play "Equal," featuring 'Nikola,' who has suffered from tuberculosis since childhood, and his devoted doctor friend 'Theo,' opens on the 18th.

"Equal" is a work by Kenichi Suemitsu, a Japanese playwright, director, actor, film director, and animation scriptwriter, which premiered in Tokyo in 2015. "Equal" deals with people who try not to lose hope amid despair and features the unique theme of alchemy.

In a rural village in Europe in the early 18th century, Nikola, who has suffered from tuberculosis since childhood, lies bedridden for a long time. His devoted friend Theo studies medicine for Nikola and becomes a doctor at a small clinic. However, Nikola's condition worsens, and he feels death approaching. Theo approaches alchemy, which has disappeared in pursuit of "eternal life," and the two face a fateful week.

Jo Sung-yoon, Choi Jeong-heon, and Lee Su-ung play Nikola, who struggles with guilt toward his caring friend. Kim Ji-hwi, Ahn Tae-jun, and Ji Ho-rim portray Theo, who sacrifices himself for what he wants to protect.

Director Lee Eun-young said, "Through this work, I hope it becomes a journey to find the answer by looking at myself, who is stranger than others, in the continuous unreal daily life," sharing her thoughts on the opening.

"Equal" will be performed at Daehakro Yes24 Stage 2 until November 22. Preview performances from the opening day to the 27th can be booked at a 40% discount, and all paid ticket holders will receive printed photos of the cast members.
