[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Emart will hold a large-scale event from the 17th to the 20th, offering up to 50% discounts on food and daily necessities.

Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the company plans to take the lead in stabilizing rising prices and easing the burden on customers' shopping carts.

First, they prepared meat at an unprecedented price. Australian chilled braised ribs are sold at 1,880 KRW per 100g. Assuming a serving size of 200g per person, a family of three can enjoy braised ribs for just over 10,000 KRW.

Meat products have been popular ingredients, with sales increasing by 10.6% compared to the same period last year in July and August. Typically, meat prices rise as the holiday approaches, but Emart prepared this event at about 15% cheaper than the 2,180 KRW per 100g price sold two weeks before last year’s Chuseok holiday.

In addition, seasoned pork jumulreok, three types of frozen Iberico pork, frozen Dahyang duck slices, and Prime chuck eye roll (U.S. origin) are offered at special discounted prices.

Representative autumn fruits, apples and pears, are also sold at affordable prices. To support farms affected by typhoons and allow customers to enjoy fruit without burden, Bojogae apples are sold in a 5kg box for 39,800 KRW. Larger-sized apples, selected mainly from bigger fruits than the usual Bojogae apples, are offered, and with Shinsegae Points accumulation, customers can purchase them at a 10,000 KRW discount for 29,800 KRW.

Since early September, Emart has been conducting a ‘full-set purchase’ program, buying apples from farms affected by prolonged rainy seasons and typhoons, from products to packaging. By expanding the sales channels for Bojogae apples, they help typhoon-affected farms and allow customers to enjoy fresh fruit at low prices.

Fresh pears are prepared in 3kg boxes (4?6 pieces) for 19,800 KRW, and the sale of discounted ‘ugly’ pears, which started on September 10, continues at 13,900 KRW per 3kg box.

Eggs are sold at 3,980 KRW per tray of 30 large eggs. Spring spinach harvested this spring is priced at 3,980 KRW per pack, and domestic shiitake mushrooms (pack) are sold at 4,180 KRW with a 30% discount when accumulating Shinsegae Points. Additionally, ramen, hot dogs, and wine are offered at discounted prices.

Daily necessities and children’s toys needed for extended indoor living are sold at up to 50% off.

Meanwhile, Emart will also promote the consumption of eco-friendly agricultural products for school meals, which have faced difficulties in securing sales channels due to the suspension of school meals caused by COVID-19. From the 17th to October 31st, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Organic Farming Association, Emart will select essential shopping cart items weekly and offer a 20% discount to Shinsegae Points members.

Emart plans to support struggling suppliers by purchasing eco-friendly agricultural products for school meals in bulk, while supplying eco-friendly agricultural products to customers at affordable prices.

Choi Hoonhak, Executive Director of Marketing at Emart, said, “Ahead of the holiday, we are conducting a large-scale core shopping cart product event to lower rising prices and provide more practical benefits to customers.” He added, “We will continue to introduce good quality and affordable products, which is the essence of the large-scale retail business, to help stabilize household finances nationwide.”
