National Intangible Heritage Center Hosts the 4th World Intangible Cultural Heritage Forum
The 4th World Intangible Cultural Heritage Forum will be held online from the 23rd to the 25th. It is an international forum hosted by the National Intangible Heritage Center and organized by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Intangible Cultural Heritage Center. Twenty experts on environment and intangible cultural heritage from 12 countries around the world will explore the relationship between humans and nature through intangible cultural heritage and seek future directions. An official stated, "It will be a time to reassess the value of intangible cultural heritage amid the crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change."
The forum will begin with a keynote speech by Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture. He will introduce UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage policies that redefine the relationship between humans and nature. Professor Beomsun Park of the Anthropocene Research Center at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) will examine the messages that climate change and ecological crises convey to humanity, and Professor Jaechun Choi, Chair Professor at Ewha Womans University, will present cases where humanity has overcome crises through intangible cultural heritage. Michael Mason, Director of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution, will point to the realization of sustainability in intangible cultural heritage and emphasize the central role of indigenous peoples and local communities.
The forum will be broadcast live via the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Intangible Cultural Heritage Center’s YouTube channel, Naver TV, and the forum portal. It will also be aired later on Jeonju MBC. For more details, please refer to the forum portal space.
