Jeju Coast Guard Office Announces 'Special Marine Safety Management Measures' for Chuseok Holiday Jeju Regional Coast Guard Headquarters


[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Regional Maritime Police Agency (Chief Kim Seongjong) announced on the 17th that it will secure maritime safety by conducting systematic maritime accident prevention activities and special measures by function before and after the Chuseok holiday so that the public can spend a relaxed and safe holiday.

? Phase 1 (Preparation): ’20.9.21 (Mon) ~ 9.29 (Tue), 9 days (Pre-preparation, inspection, and promotion)
? Phase 2 (Response): ’20.9.30 (Wed) ~ 10.4 (Sun), 5 days (Full-scale on-site safety management response)

Jeju Maritime Police plans to focus on detailed safety management activities through cooperation with related organizations as the Chuseok holiday, which involves a large movement of people including returnees and tourists, coincides with the implementation of social distancing level 2 due to the local spread of COVID-19.


First, they will establish navigation order and conduct preventive activities for multi-use vessels such as passenger ships, pilot boats, and fishing boats.


Patrol vessels will be deployed forward within a 10-mile radius of passenger ship routes transporting returnees and tourists (9.30 ~ 10.4) to maintain an emergency response posture. For pilot boats, the Korea Maritime Traffic Authority and local governments will conduct mobile inspections (7 pilot boats / during the 4th week of September) to create a safe maritime traffic environment so that returnees can visit their hometowns with peace of mind.


For fishing boats, joint inspection teams will be formed with local governments and each maritime police station to guide safe fishing leisure activities and compliance with COVID-19 prevention rules.


Additionally, to prevent drunk navigation accidents that may occur due to the festive Chuseok holiday atmosphere, special crackdowns on drunk navigation will be conducted focusing on multi-use vessels to raise safety awareness among operators and crew members.

Moreover, during the Chuseok holiday period, various safety management activities will be carried out, including the forward deployment of rescue forces to Hwasun Port to strengthen rescue capabilities in maritime accident-prone areas, and establishing mobilization readiness of marine pollution response resources with the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation in preparation for possible marine pollution accidents, covering the capabilities of related organizations and all departments of the maritime police.


A Jeju Maritime Police Agency official stated, “Through proactive accident prevention activities during the traditional Chuseok holiday of our nation, we will do our best to protect the precious lives and property of the people and create a safe Jeju sea.”
