[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A national petition has been raised claiming that a newborn died due to forced labor induction at a women's hospital in Busan, sparking widespread social outrage.
On the 15th, a petition titled "Our baby, who was healthy throughout the ten months, passed away due to forced labor induction. The medical staff are manipulating charts to hide their negligence. Please help us" was posted on the Blue House national petition board. As of 10:50 PM on the 16th, the petition had garnered over 37,860 signatures.
The petitioner stated, "After undergoing forced labor induction, our precious first daughter passed away. The medical staff are manipulating charts to conceal their fault," and pleaded, "Please help us."
She added, "After three years of marriage, we finally had our long-awaited first child through in vitro fertilization. The infertility specialty hospital where I received the procedure does not handle deliveries, so from the 12th week of pregnancy, I was receiving care from Dr. A at a women's hospital in Busan."
She continued, "The expected delivery date was July 6, but Dr. A strongly recommended labor induction, and it was performed on June 22. Later, I found out that June 23, the day after delivery, was Dr. A's day off."
The petitioner claimed, "Until just before delivery, only the head nurse and nursing assistants took turns performing vaginal exams. Dr. A never once checked the condition of the mother or fetus," and added, "During the delivery process, when the baby did not come out, I expressed my intention to give up on natural delivery due to exhaustion, but my opinion was ignored. The doctor forcibly inserted a vacuum extractor and repeatedly applied strong abdominal pressure to deliver the baby."
She expressed, "I was treated with disregard and felt like a test subject due to the medical staff's unilateral and excessive delivery process. Even now, thinking about that time is terrifying and painful," showing her distress.
Furthermore, the petitioner explained, "When the baby was fully delivered, the baby did not cry at all, and the medical staff did not show the baby to us. The medical staff, sensing something was wrong immediately after birth, put me under general anesthesia."
She continued, "The baby's condition worsened, and we transferred to a university hospital, but the transfer was delayed. The baby ultimately passed away from cardiac arrest about four hours after birth," and said, "I was only able to see our baby for the first time after hearing the news of the baby's death. The baby's neck had two thin red bruises as if from strangulation, the head and face were swollen, and there were bruises all over the body."
The petitioner lamented, "If a cesarean section had been performed during labor, our baby might still be healthy beside us. Even until just before the baby's head emerged, the fetal heart rate was stable on the monitoring test, indicating the baby was very healthy. The thought that we could not protect our baby due to the medical staff's wrong judgment is very painful for us."
She added, "After going through this, I realized how harsh the reality is that bereaved families have to prove medical malpractice themselves," and said, "Currently, there are no CCTV cameras installed in the delivery room, so it is not easy for us to prove that the medical staff ignored the mother's opinions and proceeded with forced labor unilaterally."
Finally, the petitioner stated, "Even if a medical accident occurs, we inevitably become the weaker party under the current system," and called for a thorough investigation of the incident and the mandatory installation of CCTV within hospitals.
