[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Yoo-jin] Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Suga Yoshihide, who was elected as Japan's new Prime Minister, expressing expectations for the continued development of bilateral relations.
In the congratulatory message, President Putin said, "Thanks to the efforts of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and others, we were able to make considerable progress in dialogue between the two countries," and added, "I would like to confirm that I am ready to engage in constructive cooperation with Prime Minister Suga on bilateral and international issues."
He continued, "This will undoubtedly serve the interests of the peoples of both Russia and Japan and contribute to the strengthening of stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region and the world."
The Kremlin introduced that Putin offered words of encouragement, expressing confidence that Prime Minister Suga's high authority and rich political experience will help him perform his duties as Prime Minister.
Earlier that day, Suga, who positioned himself as the successor to the Abe Shinzo administration, was elected as Japan's new Prime Minister. In Japan, which adopts a parliamentary cabinet system, the change of the administrative head, the Prime Minister, is the first in about 7 years and 8 months since the launch of the second Abe administration in December 2012.
