Seoul Jung-gu Installs 19 Pedestrian Signal Lights on Crosswalks for School Commutes

Installation of Ground Traffic Lights in School Zones and High Pedestrian Areas to Create a Safe Walking Environment

Seoul Jung-gu Installs 19 Pedestrian Signal Lights on Crosswalks for School Commutes

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) has installed 'LED floor traffic lights' at 19 locations, including school zones for children on their way to and from school and crosswalks at subway stations with heavy pedestrian traffic, to create a safe walking environment.

'LED floor traffic lights' are pedestrian assistance devices made by installing LED panels on the crosswalk waiting line on the ground. When the traffic light turns green, the red LED panel simultaneously changes to green, allowing pedestrians to check the signal just by looking at the ground.

This is a dual safety device that enhances visibility and prevents traffic accidents. Its effect is especially doubled at night.

Through this, the district aims to secure walking safety tailored to the visibility of vulnerable traffic users such as wheelchair users, children, and the elderly, and expects to prevent traffic accidents involving pedestrians such as the so-called "smombie" group who walk while looking at their smartphones without paying attention to their surroundings.

Earlier this year, the district selected locations through consultations with related organizations such as Namdaemun Police Station and Jungbu Police Station and on-site investigations, and began installing LED floor traffic lights sequentially from elementary school routes. So far, 19 locations have been completed, and the district plans to continue the project by identifying other necessary locations.

In addition, Jung-gu plans to install unmanned traffic enforcement cameras at nine elementary school routes within the district by the end of this year to prevent frequent traffic accidents caused by carelessness in school zones. The cameras will be installed mainly in areas with heavy traffic to create safe school routes where children can walk with peace of mind.

Seoyangho, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, "We will do our best to expand various traffic safety facilities to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians and prevent traffic accidents, making Jung-gu a safe and convenient city where everyone can feel secure."
