[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando Maritime Police Station (Chief Park Je-su) announced on the morning of the 16th that they safely rescued a sinking fishing vessel at Wando Port.
According to Wando Maritime Police, at around 06:20 a.m. that day, the Wando Maritime Police substation received a report from Mr. C (a member of the civilian marine rescue association) that the fishing vessel A (9.77t) was flooding inside Wando Port.
In response, Wando Maritime Police dispatched a coastal rescue boat, patrol cars, and Pollution Control Vessel No. 1. They arrived at the scene within 6 minutes of receiving the report, confirmed that there were no casualties among the crew, secured two crane vehicles, and after lifting the vessel, brought it ashore.
Additionally, the Marine Pollution Control Division took preventive measures against secondary pollution damage by installing boom-type oil absorbents in preparation for marine pollution caused by the accident. No marine pollution from vessel A was detected during the sinking process.
Wando Maritime Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident with the vessel owner and captain.
A Wando Maritime Police official stated, “Incidents of fishing vessels flooding or sinking while docked are occurring frequently, so we ask vessel owners and captains to thoroughly manage their vessels even while docked.” He added, “The maritime police will also do their best to protect the public’s property and safety by strengthening patrols within the port.”
