Seodaemun-gu Selected for New and Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project Competition

Secured 145 million KRW in national funds... Solar power generators to be installed on 39 buildings early next year... Expected forest creation effect equivalent to 6,430 trees by producing 170,000 kWh of solar energy annually

Seodaemun-gu Selected for New and Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project Competition

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced on the 16th that it was the only district in Seoul to be selected in the recent government’s ‘2021 New Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project’ competition.

In the competition hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and promoted by the Korea Energy Agency, the district ranked 10th among 126 local governments and public institutions nationwide that applied.

The competition was divided into the ‘Energy Source Convergence Category,’ which involves applying two or more types of new renewable energy sources at one location, and the ‘District Complex Category,’ which installs new renewable energy in areas mixed with houses, public buildings, and commercial facilities.

Among these, Seodaemun-gu was selected in the ‘District Complex Category’ and will receive 145 million KRW in national funding.

The district plans to add its own budget to make a total project cost of 307 million KRW to install solar power generators starting early next year on 39 buildings in the low-rise housing energy self-sufficient villages of ‘Hong-eun-dong Hobakgol Village’ and ‘Bukgajwa-dong Happy Village’ within the region.

Each building will have 3 to 6 kW units, totaling 151 kW capacity, expected to produce about 170,000 kWh of solar energy annually, which is equivalent to planting 6,430 trees.

A district official stated, "Resident activists of the energy self-sufficient villages actively participated in promoting the project and pre-registering buildings for solar power generator installation, which led to our application and selection in this competition."

Seodaemun-gu plans to further strengthen efforts to become a leading model of an energy self-sufficient innovation district through this project.

Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, “To ensure the successful operation of the government’s Green New Deal policy, we will actively discover and promote various energy transition policies along with this project.”
