Choo Mi-ae Denies Son's 'Military Service Privilege Allegation'

[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] On the 14th, during the National Assembly's government questioning session, Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae completely denied allegations of special treatment regarding her son Seo Mo (27)'s military service. Meanwhile, Ha Tae-kyung, a member of the People Power Party, criticized Minister Choo by calling her a "completely spoiled celestial being."

In a post on his Facebook that day, Rep. Ha said, "I couldn't believe my ears while listening to Minister Choo's answers in the National Assembly," and pointed out, "Her inner self is completely soaked in a sense of privilege. She claims that her son was naturally supposed to be selected as an interpreter soldier, but he was disadvantaged because of a lottery."

He directed his criticism at Minister Choo, saying, "This is a typical consciousness of the privileged class. She has a sense that she is a superior being different from ordinary people. If her son is selected, it is natural; if not, she feels disadvantaged." He raised his voice, saying, "Because she holds this consciousness, even taking sick leave or receiving special favors different from ordinary people is not considered special treatment at all."

He continued, "Ordinary people have to go through strict screening, but she thinks that even a phone call for her son is not special treatment," and criticized, "She just sees it as a natural right."

He then said, "Because she is so soaked in the consciousness that privilege is not privilege but a natural right, she thinks that the unit commander or the on-duty soldier who claims special treatment is a criminal spreading false information."

Rep. Ha also addressed pro-Moon Jae-in supporters, saying, "I hope you watch Minister Choo's response about her son's disadvantages carefully," and criticized again, "Minister Choo does not live in the same earthly realm as you. She lives separately in the celestial realm. She does not consider you as citizens of the same rank. She thinks you live in a world one grade below."

Finally, he concluded his post by saying, "After directly confirming Minister Choo's consciousness like this, please think carefully whether you still want to continue 'protecting Choo Mi-ae.'"

Earlier, Minister Choo appeared at the National Assembly's government questioning session that day and completely denied the allegations of special treatment regarding her son Seo's military service, claiming, "Because the prosecution has not finished the investigation quickly, my son and I are suffering the most damage."

Regarding the allegation that she requested the selection of an interpreter soldier for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Minister Choo emphasized, "If someone who is not qualified forcibly asks for an opportunity, that would be a request, but (my son) is a child who studied sports management," and said, "(He) is capable of fully performing the interpreter duties. There is no reason to make such a request."

She added, "On the contrary, I recently learned that the military internally recognized him as my child first and changed the normal selection method to a lottery, causing him to fail."

She also rebutted the allegations of special treatment during her son's military service, saying, "I think the soldier who reported this probably misunderstood or made an unfounded assumption unilaterally."
