"Preparing for a Safe Sea and the Era of Autonomous Ships"

Dongmyeong University 'Joseonhaeyang Club' Wins Top Prize at Autonomous Boat Competition Dongmyung University Polaris team won the grand prize in the hull structure category at the autonomous navigation boat competition.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Polaris team, a major club of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Dongmyung University (led by Lee Sang-jung, advisor Professor Kim Guk-hyun), won the Grand Prize in the hull structure category at the 2020 Korea Autonomous Boat Competition (KABOAT).

The Polaris team directly designed and built an autonomous boat equipped with a guidance navigation control algorithm for collision avoidance, a satellite navigation system, and a microcomputer, and took on the challenge.

They won first place and the Grand Prize (Hyundai Heavy Industries CEO Award) in the final design and manufacturing category for hull structure. In particular, they led the team to win the Grand Prize by creating the autonomous boat hull using eco-friendly PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) material with a 3D printer.

Team leader Lee Sang-jung (24) said, “It helped me understand the overall process of ship design that I learned in theoretical studies, and through the team project, I gained a sense of accomplishment and confidence by challenging the autonomous boat, a core technology of the future shipbuilding and marine industry.”

The Polaris team has been developing the autonomous boat by directly designing and manufacturing it since May of this year, supported by the 4th Industrial Revolution Innovation Leading University Development Project.

The competition, held for three days from August 12 at the Gyeongnam Robot Land Convention Center, was hosted by the Korean Society of Naval Architects and the Gyeongnam Robot Land Foundation under the theme “Future Ships Where AI-Based Robots and Cutting-Edge Shipbuilding Technology Meet in the Era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.”
