[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is making every effort to prepare in advance with a mindset of being prepared for any contingency to prevent damage caused by the northward approach of Typhoon No. 8 ‘Bavi’.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration as of 3 p.m. on the 25th, Typhoon No. 8 ‘Bavi’ is moving northward at a speed of 12 km/h over the southern sea of Jeju, and it is expected to directly affect Seoul from the early morning of the 27th.

The district announced on the 26th that it has conducted preemptive activities such as managing disaster-vulnerable facilities and infrastructure to prevent damage from heavy rain and strong winds caused by the typhoon.

The key preemptive measures for typhoon damage prevention include ▲temporary removal and secure fastening of screening clinics ▲restriction of access to the embankment road of Jungnangcheon Stream and Baebongsan Mountain ▲safety inspections of public and private solar power facilities ▲folding and securing heatwave mitigation facilities such as shade shelters ▲reinforcement of temporary fences installed at construction sites and measures to prevent tower crane overturning.

The district conducted inspections and safety measures on facilities under the jurisdiction of all departments, and each community service center strengthened patrols in vulnerable areas such as flood-prone zones and management of rainwater drain covers. During the wind and flood disaster period, 53 care public officials conducted pre-inspections of 79 care households vulnerable to flooding to provide guidance to prevent typhoon damage.

Meanwhile, the district uses Naver Band (‘Dongdaemun Areumjigi’) to enable organic cooperation among district and community employees and 14 dong community leaders to respond to emergency situations.

Along with pre-inspections, the district plans to thoroughly prepare for Typhoon ‘Bavi’ by maintaining a rapid situation assessment and real-time reporting system using SNS in case of damage occurrence.

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “We have conducted preemptive activities to prevent and minimize damage caused by Typhoon Bavi, which is approaching Seoul on the 27th,” and added, “We will do our best to protect the safety of residents through thorough preparation and prompt response.”
