Real-time Monitoring of IoT-Enabled Elderly-Dense Areas and Childcare Centers Vulnerable to Heatwaves for Proactive Heatwave Response
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Cho) has taken real-time heatwave response measures using the Internet of Things (IoT).
In December last year, the district installed sensors at 108 locations to detect heatwaves, fine dust, noise, and more, establishing the 'Seocho Smart City Platform.' Beyond simply providing information such as temperature and fine dust levels, the platform monitors areas with many vulnerable residents to heatwaves in real time, such as neighborhoods densely populated by the elderly, senior centers, and daycare centers, enabling proactive heatwave responses.
Currently, as part of this proactive heatwave response using IoT, the district is piloting a heatwave patrol (mobile task force) and preventing surrounding heat island effects through water spraying measures.
Last week, when a heatwave advisory was issued, Seocho-gu went beyond the usual road surface watering measures by checking the 108 sensors in real time. Among the top 10 hottest areas in the district, a small water spraying vehicle was dispatched to alleys in Bangbae-dong where many elderly living alone reside, conducting focused watering measures.
At that time, the temperature in this area was 34.3℃ as of 2 PM.
Going forward, the district plans to use IoT to quickly respond on-site to other risk factors such as fine dust and noise.
Additionally, the location of the patrol dispatched on-site will be displayed on the Seocho Smart City app, allowing residents to confirm that purification (watering) is in progress. This system will be enhanced so that residents can check not only simple information like fine dust and temperature but also the status of mobile response teams.
Mayor Eunhee Cho stated, “The elderly and children are very vulnerable to heatwaves and fine dust, requiring rapid emergency response. We will continue to devise ways to quickly respond to risk factors exposed to residents by utilizing our district’s IoT infrastructure.”
