[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Five first-year students from the Department of Military Science at Dongmyung University have attracted attention by being finally selected as 'military scholarship students' for Navy and Marine Corps officers.
This university's Department of Military Science is the only department of its kind among universities in the Busan and Ulsan regions.
According to the university, this achievement was made possible by effectively utilizing the university's remote lecture system despite the restrictions on normal classes due to COVID-19.
The five students who were finally accepted for the Navy and Marine Corps 'Additional Service Support Allowance' are Jang Ji-eun (female), Kang Min-su, Lee Dong-geun, Lee Dong-yong, and Lim Hyung-seok. Upon acceptance, they are guaranteed commissioning as officers in the Navy and Marine Corps and receive benefits such as full tuition support for four years.
In particular, unlike other scholarships, the military scholarship can be received concurrently with other scholarships, allowing them to prepare for university life and officer commissioning under better conditions.
Additionally, their status as national public officials equivalent to Grade 7 civil servants is guaranteed.
Besides Navy and Marine Corps officers, 23 first-year students have also passed the written and interview evaluations for the Army officer selection exam, with the final announcement pending.
Professor Jeong Seong-kyo, the first-year advisor, said, “During the first semester, when face-to-face classes were restricted due to COVID-19, we conducted a mix of non-face-to-face and face-to-face classes using the remote lecture system. With active support from the university headquarters, including expert special lectures, both faculty and students worked together to achieve valuable results.”
The Department of Military Science at Dongmyung University offers differentiated specialized education compared to military science departments nationwide, including English education by native speakers, separate scholarship benefits exclusive to the department, and opportunities to advance not only as Army officers but also as Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force officers.
Professor Na Seung-hak, head of the Department of Military Science at Dongmyung University, stated, “To cultivate military experts demanded by the military and society, we will actively develop curricula based on major competencies to establish a prestigious department.”
The Department of Military Science at Dongmyung University was established in March 2014. All graduates are commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps. Starting from the 2022 academic year, a graduate program in national defense has been launched, aiming to become the central university for national defense and security research in the Busan and Ulsan regions.
