[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] The Korea Internet Content Service Cooperative expressed strong regret on the 19th over the suspension of PC bang operations due to the Level 2 social distancing measures.

In a statement released that day, the cooperative said, "It is natural that all citizens must actively cooperate in prevention and quarantine to stop the spread of infectious diseases and maintain vigilance against infection," but added, "It is difficult to accept that PC bangs are specifically designated as high-risk transmission sites while industries with confirmed cases, either directly or indirectly, are exempted from this gathering ban order."

They continued, "The industry is in confusion due to impulsive decisions that manipulate the survival of small business owners whose livelihoods depend on their work, without prior preparation or discussion for minimum survival measures for PC bang operators," and said, "Before overcoming the difficulties caused by the recent heavy rains, the prolonged suspension of operations due to the spread of COVID-19 will drive small business owners to the brink of closure."

They also urged, "We call on government authorities to establish fundamental quarantine measures through consultation with the industry and prepare meticulous countermeasures so that normal business activities can resume as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, from this day, the complete Level 2 social distancing measures have been implemented in the metropolitan area, resulting in the suspension of operations for 12 types of high-risk facilities, including PC bangs. Violations of the gathering ban order will result in fines of up to 3 million won under the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
