Yeongdeungpo-gu Holds Photo Exhibition for the 75th Anniversary of Liberation Day

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) held a photo exhibition on the 14th in front of the C-47 transport plane in Yeouido Park to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Liberation Day, inheriting the patriotic spirit of the patriotic martyrs and reflecting on the meaning of liberation.

This photo exhibition displayed 30 photos depicting the activities of the Provisional Government from the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (March 1, 1919) to Korea’s liberation (August 15, 1945), the anti-Japanese independence movement, the images of independence activists who devoted themselves to the country, and the changes in the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) throughout history.

The exhibition was held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with fever detectors and hand sanitizers installed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and was conducted in compliance with social distancing measures.

At 1 p.m., Jang Ho-gwon (eldest son of independence activist Jang Jun-ha), head of the Seoul branch of the Liberation Association, and about 20 descendants of independence patriots gathered. Starting with Jang Ho-gwon’s congratulatory speech, Jeong Dong-ung, head of the Yeongdeungpo-gu branch of the Liberation Association, read a “Letter to My Father.” Afterwards, a “Manse” (long live) movement performance shouting “Manse” was held.

The “Manse” movement performance was also attended by Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Chae Hyun-il, National Assembly member Kim Min-seok, Yeongdeungpo-gu Council Chairman Go Gi-pan, and seven other council members, sharing a moment to recall the joy of liberation 75 years ago.

Despite cloudy and windy weather on the day of the photo exhibition, about 400 residents visited and reflected on the meaning of August 15 Liberation Day.

A resident who participated in the exhibition said, “I always try to remember with gratitude the patriotic martyrs who sacrificed for the country, but it is not easy,” and added, “Through this photo exhibition, I was able to feel again the passion of the independence movement and the joy of liberation.”

In addition, a district official stated that the C-47 transport plane in Yeouido Park was chosen as the venue for the photo exhibition due to its deep historical significance.

The C-47 transport plane was the aircraft boarded by the Korean Liberation Army’s Jeong Jin-dae on August 18, 1945, to participate in battles against the Japanese army. The Keijo Airfield where the C-47 landed at that time is now Yeouido Park, and considering this historical significance, it was finally selected as the venue.

Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Chae Hyun-il said, “I express my deep respect and gratitude to the patriots who devoted their lives for Korea’s independence against Japanese colonial rule and to the families of independence patriots,” and added, “I hope this photo exhibition will be a time to honor the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs who sacrificed for the country and the nation and to reflect on the precious meaning of Liberation Day.”
