[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man in his 20s who entered an unlocked motel room and sexually assaulted a woman avoided a prison sentence.

On the 14th, according to Jeju District Court, the 2nd Criminal Division (Chief Judge Jang Chan-su) sentenced Kim Mo (25), who was arrested and indicted on charges of trespassing with quasi-rape and filming using a camera, to 3 years in prison with a 5-year probation.

He was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and attend 40 hours of sexual violence treatment lectures.

The court stated, "Considering the circumstances and method of the crime, the nature of the offense is very serious. The victim appears to have suffered significant psychological trauma due to this crime," but also explained the sentencing reasoning by saying, "The defendant admitted to the crime and reflected on his wrongdoing, and reached an amicable agreement with the victim who does not wish to pursue punishment."

Earlier, Kim was brought to trial on charges of breaking into a motel room in Jeju at around 5:45 a.m. on April 16, sexually assaulting the sleeping victim (26, female), and filming her body with a mobile phone.
