[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 13th that it is supporting the disposal of aged asbestos slate.
Slate was a widely used building material in the mid to late 1990s, mainly used for the roofs of old houses or warehouses. It contains about 15% asbestos, a Group 1 carcinogen, so disposal must strictly follow legal procedures.
Since launching the support project in 2011, Jangseong-gun has supported asbestos slate disposal for facilities including approximately 2,580 houses, as well as livestock barns, warehouses, and factories.
This year, since February, applications for the slate disposal support project have been accepted, and a total of 316 buildings have been confirmed as project targets. Currently, slate disposal has been completed for 255 buildings.
The county plans to support an additional 120 buildings and will accept applications until the end of next month.
Once confirmed as a project target, up to 3.44 million KRW per household will be supported for asbestos slate disposal costs. Any disposal costs exceeding the support amount must be borne by the applicant.
Yoo Doo-seok, the mayor of Jangseong-gun, said, “Aged asbestos slate causes airborne dust and seriously harms health. We will protect the health of residents and create a pleasant living environment by supporting slate disposal.”
