Assemblyman Kim Tae-ho Actively Proposes Declaration of Hapcheon as a 'Special Disaster Zone' Assemblyman Kim Tae-ho.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Congressman Kim Tae-ho (Gyeongnam Sancheong, Hamyang, Geochang, Hapcheon) requested the government on the 11th to declare a special disaster zone to support the rapid recovery and damage relief of Hapcheon County, which suffered flooding damage due to increased discharge from Hapcheon Dam following recent heavy rains.

On the same day, Congressman Kim visited the flood-affected areas in Hapcheon County, which suffered significant damage, met with residents to assess the damage situation and offer consolation, and stated that he proposed to Gyeongnam Province and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety that the designation of a special disaster zone be expedited for swift damage recovery.

Congressman Kim also emphasized, “During the period of continuous heavy rain, the Korea Water Resources Corporation, which manages the dam, rapidly increased the discharge from Hapcheon Dam, and due to failure in water level control, the damage to residents in the downstream areas of the dam is very severe. We will analyze whether this damage is a natural disaster or a man-made disaster and strive to find fundamental solutions.”

As of the 11th, Hapcheon County has reported a provisional total of 101 cases of public facility damage due to heavy rain, with damage costs exceeding 25.6 billion KRW. Additionally, 435 hectares of farmland and 8 livestock barns were flooded. Sixty-three houses were also submerged, resulting in 135 displaced residents from 91 households.
