Asan Campus Blue Hall 2nd Floor Union Office Established
Plan to Invite Moon Seong-hyun, Chair of the Economic and Social Council
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] The Samsung Display labor union will officially open its union office at the end of this month and begin full-scale activities.
According to industry sources on the 11th, the Samsung Display labor union plans to set up a union office on the second floor of Blue Hall within the Asan 1st Campus in Chungnam this month and hold a plaque unveiling ceremony.
The Blue Hall on campus is known as the welfare building, equipped with employee cafeterias and convenience facilities, making it convenient for movement and allowing for free activities.
The union office inside Blue Hall is currently undergoing interior construction. The union plans to hold the official plaque unveiling ceremony in line with the opening date once the construction is completed. They are discussing inviting key figures such as Moon Sung-hyun, Chairman of the Economic, Social and Labor Council, to the ceremony.
On the 26th, labor-management collective bargaining will take place. The union is expected to discuss increasing the number of full-time union officials to up to five at this meeting. Previously, labor and management agreed last month on some employment rules, including setting up the union office and appointing two full-time officials.
The labor-management agreement at Samsung Display gained momentum after Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics officially declared the end of 'no union management' in a public apology conference in May.
Accordingly, the Samsung Display labor union plans to start constructive labor-management relations by opening the office and promoting mutual cooperation.
Before resuming recruitment activities for union members, they plan to clarify the criteria for employee union membership levels with management. Currently, labor and management have not reached an agreement on the rank criteria regarding the 'prohibition of union membership for general employees with evaluation authority.'
However, since management is showing a progressive attitude toward establishing labor-management relations this time, the union expects to lead smooth negotiations in the future.
A representative of the Samsung Display labor union said, “We are preparing a plaque unveiling event to coincide with the official opening of the office at the end of this month,” adding, “As this is the official first step, we will build a trusting relationship through steady negotiations between labor and management.”
