Gangdong-gu Shares the Protection of Parcel Workers' Labor Rights and the Value of Labor with Residents... Hopes to Expand Participation Movement on 'No Parcel Delivery Day' August 14
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is conducting a digital campaign to protect the labor rights and interests of delivery workers who suffer from excessive workloads and to share the value of labor in commemoration of the ‘No Delivery Day on August 14.’
The district decided to join the hashtag campaign ‘#August14_NoDeliveryDay’ to support delivery workers on the occasion of the ‘No Delivery Day,’ designated for the first time in 28 years since the delivery industry began in 1992.
Recently, with the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, non-face-to-face consumption has expanded, causing an explosive increase in demand for delivery services, inevitably exposing delivery workers to long hours and excessive workloads.
Fortunately, with the designation of ‘No Delivery Day’ to guarantee delivery workers’ right to rest, the four major delivery companies?CJ Logistics, Hanjin, Lotte, Logen?and the Korea Post Delivery have participated, allowing many delivery workers to take their first summer vacation.
The district supports delivery workers’ vacations and aims to prevent excessive accumulation of delivery volumes during the vacation period by launching the hashtag campaigns ‘#August14_NoDeliveryDay’ and ‘#I_will_not_order_delivery_on_August_13.’ To participate in the hashtag campaign, individuals can post hashtags (#) and messages of support on their SNS in solidarity with the designation of ‘No Delivery Day on August 14.’
Delivery workers are classified as ‘special-type workers’ or so-called ‘special employment workers,’ who provide labor similarly to employees under Article 125, Paragraph 1 of the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act but are not covered by the Labor Standards Act. Therefore, they are not guaranteed labor rights such as working and rest hours specified under the Labor Standards Act.
In response, the district opened the ‘Mobile Worker Support Center’ on September 2 last year, the only one directly operated among local governments nationwide, striving to improve labor rights and protect the rights of mobile workers such as delivery drivers and designated drivers.
Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon said, “I welcome the designation of ‘No Delivery Day’ at a time when delivery workers’ fatigue has seriously accumulated due to COVID-19, and I hope that ‘No Delivery Day on August 14’ will be an opportunity to show consideration and interest for delivery workers.”
