Why Did Yongsan-gu Launch the 'Future Strategy Development Research Task Force (TF)'?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seongjanghyun) established a 'Future Strategy Development Research' task force (TF) directly under the Deputy Mayor earlier this month.

This is to actively discover policy projects so that Yongsan can be reborn as a global central city.

The Future Strategy TF consists of 16 elite employees from various fields including administration, IT, welfare, education, and urban planning, led by the head (Deputy Mayor) and team leader (also the head of the Planning and Budget Division). The District Policy Research Group (4 members) and external experts support their activities.

They hold regular meetings twice a month to discuss and present district policies. Ad hoc meetings are also held as needed for specific issues.

The main tasks of the TF include ▲ reviewing plans to establish a dedicated organization for promoting future strategies such as smart cities ▲ discovering public contest projects for district development such as smart city projects ▲ overseeing the discovery of Yongsan-type New Deal projects ▲ and other major policy project discovery and review.

A smart city refers to a 'smart city' that uses cutting-edge information and communication technology (ICT) to solve various daily life problems such as transportation, environment, and housing. The TF plans to prepare a reorganization plan for establishing a dedicated smart city organization within this month and find related public contest projects by next month.

In this regard, the district plans to conduct education on 'Korean New Deal and Smart City' for all senior officials on August 11. No Heeseop, Director of the Future Strategy Bureau of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, will serve as the instructor.

The Yongsan-type New Deal is the district's own plan to actively respond to the Korean New Deal, a national project of the Moon Jae-in administration. To facilitate smooth project discovery, the district created separate Yongsan-type New Deal TFs for each bureau (department) apart from the Future Strategy TF.

Their role is to discover New Deal projects by bureau (department). They will find public contest projects in the digital, green, and human New Deal sectors or benchmark projects from other local governments and finalize project plans by mid-next month. The Future Strategy TF will coordinate these overall.

Once the detailed contents are finalized, the district will reflect them in next year's major work plans and budget proposals, and the projects will be actively carried out starting in 2021. The major work report meeting is scheduled for November.

Seongjanghyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "We will establish next year's major work plans through the Future Strategy TF and Yongsan-type New Deal TF," adding, "Separately, we will also prepare various mid- to long-term promotion tasks suitable for the district's future vision."
