[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The daily number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has risen again to the 400s.

According to NHK on the 7th, Tokyo announced that the number of new COVID-19 cases that day was 462. As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Tokyo increased to 15,107.

This is the first time in six days since the 1st (472 cases) that the daily number of new cases in Tokyo has exceeded 400.

Over the past week, the total number of new cases in Tokyo was 2,416, averaging about 345 cases per day.

Recently, the number of confirmed cases has significantly increased in Tokyo due to the spread of infections within households.

By age group, infections among people in their 20s and 30s were mostly linked to entertainment districts, accounting for 24.1%.

However, for those in their 40s and 50s, 22.5% were infected within households; for those in their 60s, 40.5%; and for those aged 70 and above, 51% were identified as household infections.

Across all age groups, the proportion of household infections was 26%, indicating that about one in four confirmed cases contracted COVID-19 through family transmission.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government is considering the possibility of independently declaring a state of emergency, separate from the central government, based on trends in severe cases. They are urging people to refrain from returning home or traveling during next week's 'Obon' holiday period.
