[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on the 7th addressed the collective strike (work stoppage) by medical residents, saying, "I earnestly request the residents to consider the position of patients in the hospitals and refrain from collective actions even now, and to resolve the issues through dialogue and communication."
At the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting on the response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung expressed concern, saying, "I am very worried that medical gaps may occur in emergency rooms and intensive care units, which are directly linked to the lives of the people."
He emphasized, "The government will also communicate with the medical community with an open attitude."
Regarding the Chuncheon Uiam Dam ship capsizing accident, Prime Minister Chung said, "I am deeply sorry to the families of the victims and the public for such an absurd accident," and added, "We must thoroughly analyze the cause of the accident and prepare definite measures to prevent such incidents from recurring."
He also stated, "A few days ago, our drive-through screening system was adopted as a new standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), passing the first gateway of international standardization," and expressed gratitude, saying, "Additionally, in the evaluation of COVID-19 prevention performance among 33 OECD countries conducted under the auspices of the University of Cambridge, our country ranked first. Such overseas recognition is thanks to the dedication of our medical staff and the participation and cooperation of the people."
