Jeonju City Leads Low-Carbon, Eco-Friendly Green New Deal with Hydrogen Transportation

Introduction of 118th Civilian Supply and 15 Hydrogen City Buses

Jeonju City Leads Low-Carbon, Eco-Friendly Green New Deal with Hydrogen Transportation Jeonju City Hall

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hong Jaehee] Jeonju City, Jeonbuk Province, which launched the first hydrogen city bus operation in Korea, is expanding the supply of hydrogen vehicles and charging infrastructure to lead a low-carbon and eco-friendly Green New Deal.

On the 6th, the city announced that to accelerate the transition to a green economy, it plans to focus on building an eco-friendly hydrogen transportation system by expanding the private supply of hydrogen vehicles in the second half of the year and starting the operation of hydrogen charging stations.

This is because hydrogen vehicles do not generate fine dust during the fuel cell power generation process and purify the air, creating a pleasant atmospheric environment.

The city set a total of 140 hydrogen vehicles as the private supply volume in the first half of the year and decided to supply an additional 118 vehicles in the second half. When individuals or corporations purchase a hydrogen passenger car, they receive a subsidy of 36.5 million KRW per vehicle, allowing them to purchase it for 33.5 million KRW.

Also, starting from the 30th of last month, hydrogen city buses were deployed on route 103, which runs between Songcheon-dong Market and the nursery, and the city plans to introduce 15 hydrogen city buses this year.

Along with this, efforts will be made to build infrastructure to alleviate hydrogen charging inconveniences. Next month, Jeonju’s first hydrogen charging station will begin operation next to the Songcheon-dong bus turnaround area, and an additional station is scheduled to operate at the Samcheon-dong bus turnaround area in the second half of next year.

Furthermore, the city plans to strengthen cooperative relationships with relevant government ministries to balance the supply and demand between hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen charging stations.

In this regard, Jeonju was selected last year as a ‘Jeonju-Wanju Hydrogen Pilot City’ by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and is promoting hydrogen fuel cell demonstration projects and hydrogen supply infrastructure construction projects. The city also plans to build a hydrogen play experience center and an integrated safety management center.

Kim Byungsoo, Director of the New Growth Economy Bureau, said, “We will devote all efforts to the Green New Deal, which focuses on expanding green energy, including expanding eco-friendly hydrogen mobility and hydrogen economy infrastructure,” and added, “We will do our best to revitalize the local economy through the hydrogen-based industry.”
