[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun stated on the 6th, "Following the 5th generation (5G), we will continue to maintain our position as the number one country in mobile communications in the 6G market."
At the 12th Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung said, "We will proactively secure 6G technology, which will be the core infrastructure of the non-face-to-face digital society, and take the lead in the future network market."
He added, "In the case of 5G, preparations began immediately with the start of 4G service in 2011, leading to the world's first commercialization in 2019. In the first year of commercialization, we ranked first and third in the global markets for devices and equipment, respectively. Now, we will secure leadership in 6G following 5G."
He continued, "Last April, with the completion of the preliminary feasibility study for 6G R&D, investing 200 billion won over the next five years, the foundation was laid to develop core technologies and lead international standardization. Building on this, we will localize core components and equipment and cultivate top-tier talent to continue maintaining our status as the number one country in mobile communications in the 6G market," he emphasized.
Prime Minister Chung also mentioned, "With the shift to a non-face-to-face digital society, we will integrate world-class ICT technologies into various sectors of society."
He stated, "In particular, we will implement the world's first smart maritime traffic system by integrating intelligent advanced technologies that assist human judgment in the maritime sector. Through this, we expect to improve maritime traffic efficiency and drastically reduce safety accidents."
Furthermore, he added, "We will actively enter the emerging digital maritime traffic market and develop South Korea into one of the world's leading digital maritime powers."
