[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea increased by 43 on the 6th.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 43 from the previous day’s midnight to 14,499.


The daily number of new confirmed cases once surged to 113 on the 25th of last month when a large number of Korean workers returning from a construction site in Iraq and Russian seamen tested positive, but since then, the figures have fluctuated in double digits. From the 31st of last month to the 2nd, the number stayed in the 30s, dropped to the 20s on the 3rd, rose back to the 30s on the 4th and 5th, and climbed to the 40s on this day.


Regarding the infection routes of the new confirmed cases, 23 were locally transmitted and 20 were imported from overseas. Among the local transmissions, 11 cases were in Gyeonggi, 5 in Seoul, 3 in Busan, 2 in Gyeongbuk, and 1 each in Chungnam and Jeonnam.


Of the 20 imported cases, 6 were detected during quarantine. The rest tested positive while in self-isolation at their residences or temporary living facilities in Seoul (4), Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk (2 each), and Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonnam, Gyeongnam (1 each).


The United States accounted for the highest number of imported cases with 5. Following were Russia with 4, Uzbekistan with 2, and Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Japan, Pakistan, the Philippines, France, Mexico, Brazil, and Cameroon with 1 each.


On this day, 22 of the new confirmed cases occurred in the metropolitan area. Nationwide, new cases were reported in 9 cities and provinces.


The number of patients who have recovered and been released from isolation reached 13,501, an increase of 95 from the previous day. The death toll remained at 302, unchanged from the previous day.
